CNN picks up the Christian Embassy video story

The story of the Christian Embassy video showing generals in uniform proselytizing within the Pentagon was spotlighted today by CNN.  I posted clips from the film on YouTube until the Campus Crusade For Christ managed to take it down for "Copyright" violations.  These are my previous diaries on the subject;   Theocons at the Pentagon; Exclusive Video! and Theocons at the Pentagon, the fight is on

John King, subbing for Paula Zahn,  interviewed Mikey Weinstein of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.  Mikey has led the fight against the theocons in the military.  Mikey has also published a book (With God on Our Side: One Man's War Against an Evangelical Coup in America's Military  .

The film, the CNN segment and more below.

Campus Crusade owns Christian Embassy.

The CNN segment is here;

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Did you see how Pastor John MacArthur did not get it at all?  In his world view Christinas are better soldiers (he said it) and an authentic American is one who expresses his or her religious views anytime anywhere.  Hopefully Mikey's lawsuits will wake them up.

The thing that is most scary is the email Mikey gets from service men and women come not just from Jews and atheists but also from traditional Protestants and Catholics not only Jews or atheists.

The Revered Melinda Morton also appears in the video, she was the first one to document the proselytizing at the Air Force Academy.  She and Mikey are two heros.  Here is a WaPo article about her.

The original film can still be seen here .

Now let's talk about my copyright infringement. As if Shockwave would violate the law!

The Right Reverend Rabbi Judah says the following on his intriguing web site;

It seems the folks at Christian Embassy have gotten cold feet about proclaiming their faith in the Lord & Savior, because since this story broke, they removed this video from their website, put it back up with a disclaimer, then removed it again. They also, through their parent group, Campus Crusade for Christ, had YouTube remove it from my account. I've uploaded it to the site because the Lord & Savior wasn't afraid of a few lawsuits, so I don't see why Christian Embassy ought to be. For that matter, neither am I, since this use of copyrighted material is very clearly covered by Section 107, the Fair Use clause, of U.S. copyright law.
The Right Reverend Rabbi Judah

Section 107 ehh!! You weak kneed YouTube!!!!  So much for the "Man of the Year" Time mag award.  So much for defending the little people.  And the rule of law!

The 1961 Report of the Register of Copyrights on the General Revision of the U.S. Copyright Law cites examples of activities that courts have regarded as fair use: "quotation of excerpts in a review or criticism for purposes of illustration or comment; quotation of short passages in a scholarly or technical work, for illustration or clarification of the author's observations; use in a parody of some of the content of the work parodied; summary of an address or article, with brief quotations, in a news report; reproduction by a library of a portion of a work to replace part of a damaged copy; reproduction by a teacher or student of a small part of a work to illustrate a lesson; reproduction of a work in legislative or judicial proceedings or reports; incidental and fortuitous reproduction, in a newsreel or broadcast, of a work located in the scene of an event being reported."

I claim "fair use" under Section 107.

This is the letter I got from YouTube/Google  they did not bother to alert me or allow me to defend myself.  What should I do?

I made  plug for the story to some influentials in the progressive media/blogworld. I think it merits more attention.

Let's see if anybody bites.

This story deserves more attention. It's distressing; it's such an abuse. I'd like my republic back, please. Some of us happen to think the idea of the United States of America was a rather good one. This sort of crytpo-theocracy-with-a-smile ("generals in uniform proselytizing within the Pentagon"!) has NO place in our nation's Armed Forces. These generals are guilty of a dereliction of duty, for their activities undermine unit cohesion by promoting religio-political sectarianism within the military, and dilute time and resources that are--ultimately--the taxpayers', and that should be dedicated to military readiness, not this sort of behavior. When will uniformed soldiers who are conservative evangelical Christians start honoring Christ by, say, exhibiting a bit a professionalism instead of being uniformed Christians first and uniformed Americans second?
