On Messages and Messengers

The debate over the casting of a gay actor in the movie "The End of the Spear" has spilled over to the pages of the New York Times.

The movie is based on the true story of five American missionaries who gave their lives in 1956 trying to witness to an indigenous tribe in Ecuador. When the movie was first released, Al Mohler, President of Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, KY criticized movie makers for casting a gay actor in the lead role.

The New York Times quotes Jason Janz, Assistant Pastor of Red Rocks Baptist Church in Denver, as saying
"we must realize that the Christian message and the messenger are intricately related."
It also quotes film director Jim Hanlon's response that,
"If we start measuring the sin of everyone in a movie, we would never be able to make a picture because none of us would be left."

I agree with Hanlon.

This entire controversy is based on the premise within certain evangelical circles that homosexuals do not enjoy equal rights in our society.

If anyone were to suggest that evangelical Christians should not be cast in acting roles portraying non-evangelical Christians, these same evangelical Christians would be screaming loud and long about how they were being attacked and denied their civil rights.

This entry is cross-posted from the Mainstream Baptist weblog.

The kerfuffle over the gay actor in what was supposed to be an update of a classic Christian missionary movie brilliantly illustrates the fact that fear-based 'issues' have eclipsed the original love-based teachings of Christ.

It's as bad as Bibleolatry: they worship the book, and ignore its words.

Here, they're bashing the actor, and ignoring the story.

Sad, really.

It is worth posting the quotes from Focus on the Family and Mr. Hanon in the NY Time article.

Other evangelicals said they felt that the message of the film should override such considerations.

Bob Waliszewski, head of the media review department at Focus on the Family, said that he was saddened by e-mail messages from angry Christians who said they would not see the movie.

A generation of young people were inspired to become missionaries by the true story, and Mr. Waliszewski said he had hoped a new generation would be moved by "End of the Spear."

"Has Focus on the Family made a strong statement against homosexuality? Absolutely," he said. "But what is the message of the product? And do we at Focus feel compelled to check on the sexual history of everyone in a movie? Did they have a D.U.I.? Did they pay their taxes?"

Mr. Hanon echoed: "If we start measuring the sin of everyone in a movie, we would never be able to make a picture because none of us would be left."

It is unfortunate that the issues of personal forgiveness and repentance seem to get drowned out by over blown concerns

Nonetheless, in the larger equation - given that FOF has been one of the leaders in a national campaign which vilifies gays - Waliszewski's and Hanon's statements are disengenuous. If these two truly backed their statements with action, they would be obliged to quit working for Focus On The Family and publicly denounce the anti-gay hate speech of groups such as FOF.

Failing that, they function as enablers who provide a measure of rhetorical cover for Mr. Dobson and his cohorts.

It is tempting to take small comfort in magnanimous tone of Waliszewsky's statement on behalf of FOF, however, to so do is to ignore its hideous record of the dehumanization of sexual minorities. There is, in a very real sense, blood all over Dobson's hands. This hate group's  propaganda machine has spewed out all manner of lies calculated to injure, degrade and, ultimately, kill those of us who do not fit nicely into the correct social profile. When dealing with groups which manifest sociopathy on such a broad scale I have learned one thing and learned it well. Know your enemies and NEVER forget their true, covertly malevolent intentions. Period.

As a corollary to the above personal axiom, it is equally as important, I believe, to never fail to let the enemy know that they Are the enemy. In short, never be afraid to lob a couple of shells back into the enemy camp, if only for the therapeutic benefit to be gained by the exercise of pushing back. Make no mistake, this struggle is about nothing less than life and liberty.

If I sound militant it is because I am unapologetically so. Look what two thousand years of Jewish passivity brought the Jews of Europe in the 1930's and 40's. They learned their lesson very well. When they say "Never Again" they mean it.

Sincerely,
Lauren Taylor

In this sort of conflict, choice of words is a minefield. I very well know the perils of passivity. But, American society on the whole has not lived through such an experience.

As far as FOF and related groups go.... I think they can be call to account on the basis of their claims. Those who aspire to be Christian leaders can rightly be held to Christian behavior - and honesty is a pillar of that.

I'm not comfortable with using the rhetoric of "militancy."

I avoid metaphors that evoke images of violence.

I'm not suggesting passive acquiescence, but active resistance within a "frame" that is less threatening.
