American Fundamentalists Event and Recent News Reports
Complete audio of the event has been posted at my site (with apologies for some of the audio quality). It was nice, after thoroughly depressing those in attendance, to close with an upbeat message about the blatant anti-Constitutional and un-American attitudes of the Christian Religious Right in America. I believe that patriotism is the weapon we can use in debate and criticism of their movement. If they believe that Bible should be the law of the land, then they ARE anti-Constitutional, since the CONSTITUTION is the law of the land. In my mind this makes their entire movement ANTI AMERICAN, and I am suggesting that THIS is the argument, as simple as it sounds, that needs to be made over and over again.
Some Recent News...
Since I missed posting last Thursday (it was my travel day to the event), a couple of interesting news items have been piling up on my desktop... Bush Orders DHS to Create Center for Faith-Based Aid (Spencer S. Hsu, Washington Post Staff Writer), shows how the dramatic reorganization of government continues unabated, despite recent poll numbers and negative PR incidents experienced by the Bush Administration. Numerous news reports about the Office of Faith Based Initiatives (created, run and FINANCED exclusively by executive order, sidestepping Congress' Constitutional responsibilities to oversee and budget these things) have shown how the money given out this stealth-department has been used as a patronage-buying machine, especially in large African American churches. Spreading it out to the other cabinet-level departments is used to solidify political affiliations and loyalties amongst the Bush administration's most loyal political base (I see Lorie posted about this as well - great minds think alike!).
The Caliphate Myth (Tom Porteous, tompaine.com). Is it just me, or does the use of the term "caliphate" by Rumsfeld to justify global domination and war REALLY scary? All I can think of is when Bush used the term CRUSADE soon after 911 to describe our response to the attack. His spokesman said he misspoke, but actions speak louder than words, and their actions betray a continuation of Bush's formal Crusade policy. This can only get worse... Post a comment and show me that you missed me!!
