Candidate for Southern Baptist Convention Pres. Under Investigation by IRS |
A brief homage to the genius of Wiley Drake - his strategy has become clear.
|
Wiley Drake is one of our favorite characters around here, not to mention one of the most highly decorated ( multiple winner of Fred's Theocrat of the Week Honor Roll) - and for good reason. The former 2nd VP of the Southern Baptist Convention (a position he basically made up as he went along) has certainly kept Religious Right watchers busy. How many of us didn't even know about the Army of God's cruel support for James Kopp, the admitted assassin of Dr. Barnett Slepian, until we read about Drake's name being uncovered on the AOG's list of Kopp apologists? Could we have defined, or even spelled, "imprecatory prayer" before Drake taught us the meaning by asking God to strike dead the leaders of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State?
We can only go get the popcorn to prepare for the Buena Park, CA pastor's newest predicament: finally being investigated by the IRS for using church resources to endorse Mike Huckabee. Will Drake go the denial route? Maybe claim ignorance? (a method he has used before, by the way). Or move straight to asking for a lighting bolt with the IRS' name on it?
More importantly, will this new development help or hurt in his current bid to take over as President of the SBC later this year? Might a public dispute with the IRS over a Huckabee endorsement compel the popular Huckabee to endorse him back, once the Convention meets this Summer? Drake's brilliant master plan come full circle!?
