Oklahoma Baptists Popularizing Dominion Theology

It is not hard to find evidence of the influence of "Dominion Theology" in Southern Baptist circles in Oklahoma -- if you are familiar with this form of theocratic Christianity.  Rarely is it so openly on display as in the current issue of Oklahoma's Baptist Messenger.  In an article entltled "Rite of Passage:  Dominion versus duties,"  Walker Moore is so bold as to insert it into his own idiosyncratic interpretation of scripture:
As Paul told young Timothy, "Show yourself to be faithful in all that you do. When given a duty, do it as an act of worship unto the Lord, without complaining or belly-aching. That, my young friend, will show the world you can be faithful in little. Then God will give you a man-sized dominion." 1Tim. 4:12, WMT (Walker Moore translation.)

Teach your children to do their duties faithfully. This is the path to discovering the dominion God has planned for them.

Actually, Walker Moore's interpretation of scripture is not that idiosyncratic among Baptists in Oklahoma.  He's just making transparent the deepest desires and intentions of Dominionist Southern Baptists across the country.

Display:
In his message, "dominion" seems to be equivalent to "calling" and "duty" seems to be equivalent to "rest of life chores". Teaching vs. taking out the garbage. I don't see an explicit connection to "Dominion Theology" as primacy of theocratic rule in secular matters. Not that he might not make a connection in some other essay - just that this essay doesn't seem earthshaking.

This wouldn't shake anyone who thought that Christians have been called to exercise dominion.

The language of dominion has not been common in Baptist circles until recently.

What's the deal with his "translation" of 1 Tim 4:12???  It looks beyond idiosyncratic... I'm not a Greek scholar, but compared to standard English translations it looks just plain wrong.  I can't find anything remotely close in the different English editions listed in BibleGateway... not even The Message which is Eugene Peterson's own idiosyncratic paraphrase from the Greek.

Moore's also conflating Luke 16:16 (he who is faithful in little also in much) into the passage.  That in itself is a pretty standard dominionist quote BTW.

I agree with Nancy that on the face of it, the essay looks relatively benign compared to the dominionist stuff out there... but it seems that he is stretching to get the word "dominion" in there so he can repeat it a gazillion times.  Power of suggestion, anyone?

Could he have gotten away with another dominionist oldie but goodie, Genesis 1:28?  It certainly would have fit the lawn mowing analogy a lot better.  Take dominion over the fish, the beasts, and the front yard.  (Leave other people alone while you're at it, btw.)

A better word choice would have been "domain" if of course he didn't mean it in a "dominionist" construct.

I would actually not be surprised to find this had been translated rather uniquely (especially if the WMT had been recently revised).

At least based on the list of translations of 1 Tim 4:12 online, no version has anything about dominion.  Even the NIV, which has some fairly explicit translation biases towards a dominionist viewpoint and a few "unique" verse interpretations itself, doesn't go that far.

(Of the versions in that "parallel bible" link above, the NASB is probably the closest to a "word for word" translation; the RSV version is also similar.  In pretty much all versions save for Moore's skewed translation (which is as blatant as the skewing of Heaven being under attack (in Matthew 11:12)  to a justification for "god warrioring" in the NIV, in my opinion), the verse is emphasizing that youth can be a good example to their elders in walking the good road.

Also, Luke 16:16--along with Matthew 11:12, a nearly identical verse--has, as you noted, been extensively misused by dominionists--interestingly, Matthew 11:12 is skewed towards the near opposite of its meaning in most other Bible translations in the NIV, but Luke 16:16 seems to have emerged relatively intact.  (The Amplified Bible's commentary on Luke 16:16 and Matthew 11:12 actually makes this rather clear that the idea is of people forcing their way into Heaven rather than going about it God's way.)

Sadly, dominionist-friendly translations that explicitly skew the translated text of the Bible itself (as opposed to merely relying on scripture-twisting) are becoming more common--and this is a distressing thing to see with the SBC, as it's another sign the steeplejacking of that denomination is being consolidated. :(

I would actually not be surprised to find this had been translated rather uniquely (especially if the WMT had been recently revised).

The "WMT" is his own translation ("Walter Moore Translation"), so he could retranslate it on the fly if he wants to.  I've seen this practiced before among New Apostolic Reformation (neo-Pentecostal) dominionists... for example, one of the leaders of the group I once belonged to once trotted out his own warped translation of a passage in Colossians to show that we were Christ on earth and  had all dominion to take over and rule and reign as Christ.

When I asked about this, I was told that I was the problem since I had missed some cell group meetings and was not appropriately submissive to new teachings, or to my husband, who BTW wasn't there to hear this lovely teaching b/c he was at work.  He was basically told not to take my word for it but theirs, since of course they were hearing from God, and I was hearing from... Satan!

That's when I left, telling hubby that he could stay if he wanted, but that I wasn't going back, period.  That was four years ago this spring.  Woo hoo!!!!

Back to the "translation"... this practice has apparently jumped denominational lines, from neo-Pentecostals to someone who likely skews more Christian Reconstructionist.  Rick Warren came close to doing this in Purpose Driven Life in that he picked and chose from at least a dozen translations to make his point (NAR "horizontal apostle" C. Peter Wagner was his mentor at Fuller, btw), but here we have someone who is doing it himself, and building his case on the fact that he has found something that no one else translating this passage in the entire history of English translations has ever seen before.

Barry Lynn told the audience at the Houston Americans United banquet that Barak Obama gets into churches and tells the congregation form the pulpit that he needs help to bring in the kingdom.  I have heard black Democrats use terms like doing the Lord's work in conection with their picking up voters in church vans to transport them to voting booths. Since McCain believes it is officially a Christian Nation I assume that any work one does for the state is considered sacred.

In my mind, the most objectionable aspect of Moore's theology is that he equates Christian gifts and callings with dominion.

Traditional interpretations equate these with service.  The Apostle Paul called himself a "slave" or "servant."

The dominionist preoccupation with authority and power over others is evident in Moore's translation.

What I hear is a total lack of caring for how much misery they cause to others- those others have to take it with a smile.

But then, according to the dominionists- we're only supposed to obey- not think, not ask questions, and certainly not refuse to be their slaves.
