Kelly Shackleford Speaks on 501c3 at the HAPC
Schackleford did deal with the 501c3 issue by saying first of all it was a "problem". This "problem" was being used by Satan. Satan's tactics are deception and fear, he said. Fear and deception are what goes on with 501c3. Thus we conclude that the devil is using this law to bring fear into the hearts of pastors that causes them not to take a stand. Kelly did concede that the law is a guarantee of freedom for pastors. Kelly reminded the men that pastors can endorse, and cautioned the men not to censure yourself. Thus they were given more leeway in the law than they realized, the lawyer explained.
Kelly has shared platforms with Rick Scarborough and is a noted lawyer working for religious right projects in the nation. Scarborough has claimed that pastors can get in the pulpit and announce who they are voting for. Pastor Riggle has been a host pastor for Scarborough's crusades. Americans United cautions against this practice of endorsment from the pulpit as well as Melissa Rogers who is a legal expert and professor at Wake Forest University.
Kelly, who began his speech with the warning about Satan using fear, extended his legal opinion that an attack was coming to go after Christians. He told the audience that lesbians are coming after the church and he had documents to prove it. He later stated there is an on coming invasion against the church. Even though there was a warning, the lawyer wanted the pastors to be encouraged.
One of the actist's hobby horses is his concern about Texas seminaries. Kelly beleived that until recently, the state of Texas took over seminaries and regulated them closing down some black and Hispanic schools. A recent court ruling is used by Kelly to justify his accusations. Other legal experts claim Schackleford is outlandish in this claim.
Kelly did mention the arch enemy here, which was Americans United for Separation of Church and State. He stated AU went after pastor Riggle at this time because of the coming election. It was proposed that there is a conspiracy existing at AU headquarters seeking to control the election in November. Thus some are actually seeking legal recourse against AU for tyring to endorse candidates under the table. Barry Lynn is aware that a counter suit is pending. There was no mention of the specific problem with Riggle's use of his name and official church title in the presentation. One note of interest is the eplanation of what is allowed in church activism regarding politics. It was the exact same explanation the ACLU and AU tell churches. The speaker conceded that there has only been one church that lost its tax exempt status and that was only for one day. There was little doubt that the lawyer drummed up some business to explain to local congregations the finer points of how Satan is seeking to intimidate them through 501c3.
