Pregnant Pause: The Real Issue Worth Talking About Behind The Palin Story
By Rob Boston Tue Sep 02, 2008 at 11:09:23 AM EST printable version print story
The announcement by Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, is pregnant has drawn an interesting response from the Religious Right: It's no big deal.

James Dobson of Focus on the Family issued a statement lauding the Palins and asserting, "Being a Christian does not mean you're perfect. Nor does it mean your children are perfect. But it does mean there is forgiveness and restoration when we confess our imperfections to the Lord."

topic: sarah palin
Richard Land, chief lobbyist for the Southern Baptist Convention added, "I don't think it [hurts] at all....Pro-life people don't see a baby as punishment."

Still others have insisted that the matter is a private one that should not be an issue for public debate.

But it will be an issue, and it should be. Here's why: Public policy questions are implicated. Sarah Palin, as a candidate for governor of Alaska, expressed her opposition to comprehensive sex education in public schools. She told the Eagle Forum she would support only "abstinence based" sex education and remarked, "The explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support."

Of all the components of President George W. Bush's "faith-based" initiative, none has failed more miserably than abstinence-based education. Many of the programs are thinly veiled religious dogma. Study after study has shown them to be ineffective.

To top it off, the American public does not support this approach. Polls show majorities backing comprehensive sex education for teens, programs that stress the need for abstinence yet also talk about contraceptives and ways to prevent pregnancy and the transmission of disease.

Despite this, federal tax dollars continue to be poured down the "abstinence-only" rat hole. About two months ago, Americans United reported on a $1.1 million Justice Department grant that went to an organization called "Best Friends." Best Friends' main job seems to be holding a fund-raising gala every year to pay for more abstinence-only programs. It is run by the wife of former GOP Education Secretary and "drug czar" William Bennett. http:

Anyone who is the parent of a teenaged daughter - and I am - can't help but feel for what the Palin family is going through right now. At the same time, we would be naïve not to acknowledge that what we teach - or don't teach - our young people can have dramatic consequences.

According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancies, there are more than 729,000 teen pregnancies every year. Most of these pregnancies are unplanned. Comprehensive sex education would not have blocked every one of them, of course, but it's a safe bet it would have prevented some. But right now, under federal law, we can't spend even one dime of tax money on these programs.

That's the real issue worth talking about during this campaign.

Display:
Something that I think is important to remember is the numbers of Religious Right teen girls who get pregnant.  I've read many reports of girls protesting against clinics, only to sneak in for an abortion (and some went out and protested the next day).  (I think there is even a statistical study done on this- if so, I think a link or reference should be posted in connection to this topic!)

Oh, yeah... their case is always different.  Yeah, right!!!

Hypocrisy, thy name is fundamentalist!

Actually- in this situation I feel very sorry for the young daughter.  She may be marrying someone because she feels she HAS to, and not because she WANTS to.  This whole thing will create problems if she wanted to continue her education (although I admit that being part of a dominionist family- that may be dissuaded), it may create unnecessary stress in her life, and for ordinary families, it would significantly increase the chances of the girl being poor for the rest of her life.

I wish that they all would look at reality, and see where their path is leading.  They cry loud and clear "Personal Responsibility"- but they refuse to see their own personal responsibility in the hell they create for others.

by ArchaeoBob on Tue Sep 02, 2008 at 11:44:53 AM EST

If the pressure is bad for Bristol, at least she has the family ties of loyalty to her mother which no doubt made her decision to "do the right thing" easily.

Levi Johnston does not have that luxury.  Here's a young man who didn't want kids (who does, at 18 these days?) who, even before Palin was announced as VP nominee, must have been under tremendous pressure given the political status of his future mother-in-law.

I do hope that Johnston, with his own family, made the decision to marry Bristol without interference from the Palin clan.  But given what we know so far about Palin and meddling in the affairs of others related to her family, I am not sure I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

In any case, unless some rag like that National Enquirer manages to coax a comment out of the father, it's no doubt a dead story in the long run.  The Obama campaign, rightly, won't touch this, and the traditional press will move on to the next story, blunder, scandal, etc.

by tacitus on Tue Sep 02, 2008 at 03:50:53 PM EST

but it shouldn't be placed on Bristol Palin's back either.

I think that Sarah Palin has to be made to defend her stance on abstinence-only sex ed in the face of statistics saying it doesn't prevent pregnancy. She needs to be made to say that she doesn't care if it doesn't work.

by NancyP on Tue Sep 02, 2008 at 10:47:23 PM EST

...how she would spend tax dollars to assure that the teens who do get pregnant because they have been failed by their parents AND by the education system will have healthy babies with a chance to survive and thrive in life.

It's one thing to preach "abstinence only." It's another thing entirely to put money where the pulpit resounds to support policies that help mother, father, and child to build strong families. Sadly, I see no such effort from those who shut their eyes so tightly to the reality of hormones, immature decision making centers, and teenage rebellion.
