There are two news articles in today's Ledger that are of concern.

http://www.theledger.com/article/20090424/NEWS/904259979/1003/NEW S00?Title=Jesus-License-Plate-Could-Come

The new license plates come up for a vote this year.

http://www.theledger.com/article/20090423/NEWS/904235098/1005/NEW S02?Title=Bill-Would-Strengthen-Voucher-Program

This bill, also possibly up for a vote this year, would among other things allow businesses to contribute to the vouchers.

This state practically reeks with dominionism.  We've seen bills that would provide state collection of funds for Dobson's Focus on the Family, we've seen strong attempts to eliminate the separation of church and state, and it keeps on going on.

The Voucher bill is especially troubling, as while they're trying to fund private (religious) schools, at the same time they're cutting more and more from the education budget.  They've already cut higher education to the bone- and now trying to chip out bone as well.

A politician once said that higher education should be "market driven"- obviously with money going to those programs that Big Business wants.  I think that we're seeing an attempt to kill public education.

There are already rumbles that they want higher education so only those who can afford it out-of-pocket can attend.  Primary and Secondary education has also always been a target- can't expose the kiddies to anything not approved by their masters (dominionist preachers and the big business moguls behind them), you know!!!

Charlie Crist is on board with the plates, but the ACLU is aware of the situation.

I hope it doesn't come down to a lawsuit.  Unfortunately, there are a great many people who think they have God's command to force their "version of Christianity" on everyone else- and this would be a first step in making that legal.

Last week at work with the State of FL,  I received notice that the Legislature was considering a 4% pay cut for all State employees making between $25,000 - $100,000.  (Those over $100,000 would only have a 1% pay cut!)  My State is in a budget crisis yet has deemed Jesus license plates so important that they are willing to pay the substantial costs of a lawsuit that AU and ACLU  have already said will happen.  Its Christian voodoo - if we have the Jesus plates, Jesus will bless us with $$$ to solve our financial crisis and help Governor Charlie Crist into the White House.

Lawrel, is there anything about those making less than $25,000 a year?

I suspected something like this was probably coming down the pike- a person I know (city employee) living up north is facing a 25% cut in pay (while the mayor of the city takes a whopping 10% cut- from $140,000 to $126,000).  The person I know only makes around $30,000 a year- and won't be able to afford her home if the pay cut goes through, which it will in a couple of months.  Indeed, she says that most of the people she knows that works for the city will probably end up homeless- including cops and firefighters.

It's a proven fact that the less the income, the greater the impact any cut will make on one's life.  I just wonder if the homeless ministries up there will start telling them that if they hadn't sinned- they wouldn't be homeless.

The law prevents them from striking... especially the police and firefighters.  They're trying to get the public involved.

I know Florida state employees who make less than $25,000- part time and so on.  At least a couple could not afford ANY cut in income- like so many of us they're living hand to mouth and paycheck to paycheck.

Oh.. and the lawsuit.  Well, it's obvious- the elected officials are the leaders and so their pay won't be cut (or they'll raise it 5% and cut it 1%).   Their personal incomes aren't in danger, so they don't care.

The Florida legislature is harming the poor and average citizens in the state- just so the elected officials can say that they cut taxes for the rich (and try to get their religious license plate and vouchers- big issues for the fundamentalist/dominionist churches) - passed!

I'm getting really sick of the Florida legislature.
