Randall Terry to Run for President. Wants to Air Incendiary Antiabortion Ad During the Superbowl

A while back, antiabortion militant Randall Terry announced that he was thinking about running for president in order to be able to place an inflammatory antiabortion ad on TV during the Superbowl. Federal rules make it difficult if not impossible for a station to turn down an ad from a candidate for president.  Aside from the question of whether he could pull it off, was the question of whether he would run with an existing political party or as an independent. In the past, he has run for office as a member of the predecessor to the Constitution Party (the U.S. Taxpayers Party), and the Republican Party.

Terry has made his decision, and he says he will run in the Democratic primaries against Barack Obama. Needless to say, Terry has no intention of cooling off of his usual incendiary rhetoric. In his press release announcing a press conference in front of the Holocaust Museum, he called abortion among other things, "genocide" and "massacre of the innocents."

In a press release, he stated:

"My constituency is the millions of pro-life advocates who want to make child killing illegal from conception until birth. My base is those who know that we must show Americans the victims of abortion, in order to restore the full protection of law to unborn babies.

"America has never truly debated child killing, because America has never truly seen child killing. We will use FEC and FCC laws for federal candidates to bring America face to face with this massacre of the innocents.

"The goal of my campaign is: 1) To create a crisis of conscience for Americans regarding the slaughter of the unborn and thereby hasten the end of legalized child killing; 2) To pound on President Obama's agenda starting with child killing, but also including our battle against socialism, our enslavement to debt, and more.  Will I defeat Mr. Obama?  I'm not delusional.  But while I may not defeat him, I can expose the genocide Obama promotes in America and around the world.

"Our help is in the Name of the Lord."

So far there is not much evidence of a campaign from the man with an insatiable media jones. But the tactic of exploiting the relative openness of electoral democracy to promote the wedge issue of Terry's theocratic politics could be one of the significant stories of the campaign season. If successful by any reasonable definition, the effort could well reopen public debate about abortion, the efforts of leaders in both parties to tamp it down, not withstanding. Terry will also exploit the opportunity to be the unrelenting bad boy of inflammatory political rhetoric to whom appeals to common ground or civility will have zero impact. Naturally, the media that has broadcast hie previous recklessness, will probably want to talk with him about that too.

without help from major donors, and those donors would be likely to demand that Terry soften his ad, which he would find unacceptable. (Does not play well with others...)

in order to win.  He will have an ad or ads ready to go that will be widely viewed right on his web site and their share of media attention and public discussion. They might even get aired at times other than the Super Bowl.
