Indicators of a Tectonic Shift on the Religious Right?

Two developments since the New Apostolic Reformation emerged as a focus of national controversy in the wake of Texas Gov. Rick Perry's prayer rally, The Response, may indicate that some realignments are underway on the Religious Right -- and perhaps even in the wider world of conservative evangelicalism.

First, the American Family Association (AFA) directed two of its radio talk show hosts to sever relationships with Brannnon Howse of Worldview Weekend, who had been critical of NAR and The Response. AFA had underwritten the costs of the rally.  Warren Throckmorton, writing at Religion Dispatches reported:

The talk show hosts, John Loeffler and Todd Friel, have shows aired by American Family Radio and also speak at Howse sponsored events. According to Tim Wildmon, president of the AFA, "we identified two people with programs on our networks and told them, 'you have to make a choice.'"

Now, Worldview Weekend reports that prominent evangelical author, preacher and broadcaster, John MacArthur also denounced NAR in a recent sermon.

Worldview Weekend paraphrases MacArthur to the effect that NAR and the Word of Faith movement are attributing the works of Satan to the Holy Spirit.  What's more, the influential Dispensationalist MacArthur is also said to claim that the NAR is not new, not apostolic, and not a reformation.

Taken by themselves, these episodes could arguably be taken as the kinds of disputes that are normal in religious and political movements of any kind.  But given the players and institutions involved here, we cannot then argue that just because political and theological disputes are normal, that specific disputes are also necessarily insignificant.

These episodes happened not incidentally, but because of and in reaction to the profound role of NAR leaders in organizing The Response on behalf of Gov. Perry.  The massive prayer rally was unprecedented in the history of American presidential politics, and demonstrated a high degree of organizational strength as well as high-level political connections and ambitions.

Here is Worldview Weekend's full summary of MacArthur's points about NAR from a recent sermon:

Brannon plays a portion of John MacArthur's sermon from October 23, 2011 in which he discusses the New Apostolic Reformation and Rick Perry's prayer Rally. Dr. MacArthur explains how the NAR and Word of Faith movement are attributing the works of Satan to the Holy Spirit and thus blaspheming the Holy Spirit as well as God. MacArthur says the NAR is not new, not apostolic, and not a reformation just like grape nuts are not grapes and not nuts. MacArthur mentions Mike Bickle and Lou Engle of the International House of Prayer as well as Cindy Jacobs. MacArthur says if you did not know better you would think someone opened the back door of the nut house, yet many of these false teachers have been embraced by some of America's largest pro-family and evangelical leaders. One pro-family leader has written Brannon to say that Bickle and Jacobs have solid doctrinal statements. What does this tell us about American Christians that follow such "Christian" leaders that defend and unite with false teachers? Why are more pastors not warning of this serious religious Trojan horse? How are America's "Christian" leaders that have and continue to unite with the WOF and NAR actually hastening the judgment of God on America? Brannon encourages you to listen to the entire message by Dr. MacArthur and to e-mail him and thank him for publically warning of the NAR and WOF and their blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

Display:
entitled, "The Modern Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit" and was delivered on Sunday, October 23, 2011 at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California.

It can be found on John MacArthur's website.  A "high quality" mp3 version can be downloaded here.

MacArthur has been one of Rick Warren's strongest critics in evangelical circles, and the "church growth movement".  He sees the NAR as a part of that, and thus heretical from his orthodox perspective.  He is also vehemently apposed to Pentecostalism/Charismaticism.

A friend of mine from way back had emailed the story about MacArthur a few days ago but I had not seen the details. Many people like my friend who have been kind of suspicious of my reporting paid attention when MacArthur said it.

and have gone ahead and posted the key parts of it having to do specifically with NAR in this new post at Talk2Action. http://www.talk2action.org/story/2011/11/7/11331/9570/Front_Page/ Details_of_possible_quot_tectonic_shift_quot_

It would be very interesting to interview Macarthur about this sermon.

Any evidence that this is part of putting together some sort of electoral strategy, running votes, etc? They're obviously culling dissenters, getting them out of the way.

MacArthur is a defender of orthodoxy, he will criticize anyone who does not promote his idea of what Christianity is.  I am not aware if he has promoted any specific political candidates, or issues.  He has even been critical of Protestant "saints" like Billy Graham.

The reason why Dr. Macarthur criticized Billy Graham is because the great evangelist refused to say that Jesus is the only way to the Father. It's on Youtube.
