I was honored to speak recently at the United Steel Workers Civil Rights Seminar at Linden Hall.  The following is a 7-minute video preview of my talk on "The War on Labor," which included information on the hijacking of religion for support of radical free market economics.  The sacralizing of radical free market economics is sometimes referred to as "Biblical Capitalism" by both its supporters and opponents.  The video is followed by a list of links and resources from the full-length presentation.

Following the Money Trail

The Public Eye of Political Research Associates has numerous articles on economic justice and documenting the war against labor.  This was the source of the chart showing millions of dollars of funding to the "anti-labor arsenal."

Start with the main page on Economic Justice.

A chart titled "The Well-Funded Anti-Labor Arsenal" includes a list of major think tanks and which foundations provide the funding.
http://www.publiceye.org/economic_justice/labor/anti_labor/fundweb.html

The "Well-Funded Anti-Labor Arsenal" of free market think tanks includes the Heritage Foundation, Cato Institute, Heartland Institute, and American Enterprise Institute.  The Public Eye list shows that the these anti-labor think tanks are heavily funded by family foundations including:  Scaife, Bradley,  and Olin foundations.

The American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC is a right-wing think tank that prepares model bills for state legislatures.  See the funders of ALEC at this link.  http://mediamattersaction.org/transparency/organization/American_ Legislative_Exchange_Council/funders

Biblical Capitalism

The following link is to an article that includes the video of David Barton claiming that Jesus was against the estate tax and the minimum wage. The video is also embedded below.
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/barton-jesus-opposed-minimum-wage

David Barton is well-known for marketing his revisionist American histories, including on the Glenn Beck Show.

Another person who markets "Biblical Capitalism" is Gary North, son-in-law of the late Rousas Rushdoony.  Two of North's anti-labor articles are linked below.

Rep. Ron Paul is closely associated with organizations that are blending radical free market economics with religion or "Biblical Capitalism," including the Ludwig von Mises Institute, the Conservative Caucus, and the John Birch Society.  See the promotional materials for Ron Paul as the keynote speaker of the Conservative Caucus' 35th anniversary gala.

Teaching Biblical Capitalism to Children

Both the short preview and full-length video titled "School Choice:  Taxpayer-Funded Creationism, Bigotry, and Bias" can be viewed in this article.
http://www.talk2action.org/story/2011/6/27/151131/081

The video provides an overview of textbooks used in private schools, some of which are being funded by public dollars through the Pennsylvania EITC  and other state corporate tax credit programs.  The featured textbook series, A Beka Book and Bob Jones University Press, are consistently anti-labor and promote radical free market economics.

Big Money Funding Anti-Environmental and Anti-Regulatory Attacks

The following preview video is of a pseudo-documentary produced by the Cornwall Alliance and claims that environmentalism is a cult in competing with Christianity.  http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/beware-green-dragon

The Cornwall Alliance is headed by Calvin Beisner, who is associated with the following right-wing think tanks:  Acton Institute, Atlas Economic Research Foundation, Institute of Religion and Democracy, and Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow.

In Pennsylvania, the blog of Keystone Progress is a good source for information on current issues related to workers' rights and other progressive causes.  The current feature is a 3-minute video titled "What Have Unions Done For Us?"

Pennsylvania's Right-Wing Think Tanks

Pennsylvania's right-wing and anti-labor think tanks include the Commonwealth Foundation, the Allegheny Institute for Public Policy and the Lincoln Institute, all heavily funded by the Pittsburgh-based Scaife foundations. The Commonwealth Foundation sponsors "The Box" podcast with Matthew Brouillette.

Brouillette, now heading the Commonwealth Foundation previously led another right-wing think tank, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy in Michigan.  Brouillette is also on the board of the REACH Foundation, which is promoting school vouchers in Pennsylvania.  REACH has been funded by the Betsy DeVos-led group of pro-school privatization organizations that are now under the umbrella of the American Federation for Children.

The Mackinac Center is a member of the State Policy Network, the service organization for the state-based free market think tank movement.

We on the other side are much to willing to tolerate and to try to compromise, or live and let live. These people are NOT. It's enough to make you want to leave the country. Sigh.
