If Knowledge is Power, Then What is Ignorance?

If knowledge is power, then what is ignorance?

It has been my experience over the past 30 years of doing research and writing about the Religious Right and various of its components, that most of us are resistant to learning much about it.  We seize on slogans and cheap name calling as a substitute for actual knowledge and processing that knowledge in ways that are intellectually, politically and reportorially useful; or indeed to change the way we think about the Religious Right and the things we do in response.  This resistance to knowledge about matters of great consequence, things that may jeopardize things that we hold dear, is an astounding dimension of our public life.  And yet many of us wonder how the Religious Right continues to exercise such power in public life.

I was reminded of this in reading my friend Steven Hassan's latest book,  Freedom of Mind: Helping Loved Ones Leave Controlling People, Cults and Beliefs.  He wrote:

Unfortunately, the media tend to focus on a cult's wacky beliefs instead of their coercive techniques.  Stories typically do not delve into how intelligent people are indoctrinated.  In the Spring of 2012, I was asked to speak to a class at Harvard's History of Science class on the "the History of Brainwashing" taught by Rebecca Lemov, and when I told the class I got interested in this subject due to my own involvement with "the Moonies" most people had no idea what I was talking about.  Few knew about major cult stories that people of my generation all take for granted.  This is very worrisome."

Coercive persuasion is often used in gaining and keeping recruit in politically active Religious Right groups beyond the empire of Rev. Sun Myung Moon.  We see cult practices at work in both Catholic and evangelical entities as well.  My purpose in this post is not to delve deeply into the details of issues related to cults or to enumerate which groups use them.  Rather, I want to surface this as an area of knowledge in which many of us, certainly myself, are deficient, even as the cultic aspects of politically oriented cults are serious.  The zealotry we often see, is often less because of belief in particular doctrines so much as cultic control by leadership.

These things said, just because a group is religious and politically conservative, does not make them a cult. I do not believe that and I know that Steve does not either. He offers rigorous, scientifically founded characteristics cults.  He also points out that cults are not limited to religious groups or to conservatism. There are business, political and psychotherapy cults as well.  Indeed, anti-democratic cultic influences can disrupt the normal functioning of well established organizations, as Marshall Ganz ruefully revealed about the way the therapy cult Synanon essentially took over and largely destroyed United Farm Workers.

While his whole book is about the characteristics of cults and what people can do to help friends and loved ones come out from the totalist control of such groups, the short definition of a cult, he writes is: "an authoritarian group headed by a person or persons with near complete control."  He also discusses how groups use specific techniques to gain influence and control over people. Broadly speaking, he says this is accomplished by what he calls "destructive mind control."

Cult influence is designed to disrupt a person's authentic identity and replace it with a new identity.  By immersing people in a tightly controlled, high-pressure social environment, destructive cults gain control of members' behavior, thoughts, and emotions.  They limit their access to outside information.  They literally take control of their minds.

Steve adds:

I have a high regard for religious freedom. Everyone has the right to believe, and the right not to believe, whatever they choose.  As a member of the Jewish faith, I believe in a God that values the freedom to control our own lives.  As a matter of principle, I am opposed to censorship or banning any group.  I also believe that no legitimate group should fear an honest critique of its practices. In general, I believe that the best way to prevent abuse is to educate and warn people about possible dangers.

The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution grants freedom of religion as it pertains to belief. However the Constitution does not grant the right to engage in behavior that violates other people's rights or the laws of the land, even if there is a claim of religious motivation.

And this is where the rubber meets the road in a democratic society. We have to respect one another's rights to believe what we will without undue interference from the government or powerful religious institutions. To this we can add predatory groups and individuals who seek to violate our freedom of mind to accomplish their own ends. There is a vast difference between community and coercion, and it us up to all of us to know the difference.  Because if we don't, the consequences of our ignorance can be profound.

Display:
I see this ignorance all the time... people, for instance, who think that dominionism (only one of the cults, or a cult-based movement) preys mainly on the uneducated and stupid.  It's hard to get them to see that even highly educated and intelligent people have vulnerabilities in their emotions, and that comes from being human (and that the dominionists really expend a lot of energy trying to recruit on college campuses).  Sometimes people express surprise that I've been in a cult, and I have to explain to them that cults don't function through the conscious and logical portions of your mind, they grab you through your emotions and the need to belong (the usual case), and they install in you the personality that THEY want, even if it's completely foreign to your own nature.

It's really interesting to learn how people get involved in cults in the first place... in my case through "missionary dating" at my university, along with on-campus groups that are highly attractive to students (especially since they often advertise with beautiful girls and handsome men).  Then the pressure started and continued long after they'd encouraged me to drop out of school and "get a real job" - doing work a kid could do with a little training (they were still trying even years after I walked).  I've heard many different tales, and the common thread was the human need to belong (combined with some really nasty tricks - almost all know what they're doing and it's deliberate).

I'm also glad that you brought up that all cults are not religious in nature.  I've read about non-religious organizations which were cults... even the non-religious side of Amway has been pointed out as having the characteristics (although Amway also often drags in religion too).  Community vs coercion... I like that because it sums up the difference in a nutshell... and you can find that even extends to the business management ones... after all, businesses are in a sense communities too, but of a completely different nature than in general society.

This is all why I emphasize to walkaways (for the reader who doesn't know the term - people who've left cults, especially ex-dominionist/ex-fundamentalist walkaways) that they need to tell their story.  Not only does it reinforce in people's minds the danger of the groups and the damage they do, but it also often helps in educating on how cults get recruits in the first place.

I think of this as the ability to focus many people and their talents toward a common goal of construction or problem solving. This is accomplished when people are taught, given tools, and brought together toward a common goal with some coordination. It takes this kind of knowledge to govern, to build, to discover, to be a community. Ignorance can also be focused. It is that quick solution with can identify a problem - moral/spiritual/economic/functional - and then emotionally react to that problem, without a purpose to solve it, but rather to destroy it. Blame is assigned, and emotions are heightened as the attack begins. Then you can attack an abortion provider, and feel good, while completely ignoring the unwanted pregnancy which drives the abortion provider to offer the service. I'm convinced that 80% of people have overlapping goals in this area, and many others, but ignorance drives emotions and focus is on destruction and attacking perceived enemies rather than knowledge driving many different skills and abilities to improve and build solutions toward common goals. In our Political climate it is becoming increasingly possible for ignorance to unleash it's power to attack and destroy, as a part of both the Right Wing, and the Progressive parts of the political perspective. I think there was a day when a majority of churches served as a place for building knowledge and that empowered society as a whole, both political party's benefited. As a majority position I'm afraid that is no longer the case. Churches now use the political party slogans and party lines to fuel emotion, and the brain rot and ignorance leads to destruction and gridlock, rather than to construction and problem solving.

by chaplain on Sun Jul 15, 2012 at 09:42:18 AM EST

I'm a political science major who actively uses that as an excuse to learn about any given topic. In history I've read how certain political organizations were run like cults. In addition there is the medieval church, Rome had the worship of Cesar, and earlier then that was the death of Socrates downed Hemlock for questioning the gods of Athens. So while this may not be something new, it, like many "traditional" things needs to be more considered.

I have my theory on this. I think this works on the same principle of any abusive relationships, alternating positive and negative reinforcement. The chief leverage in this is the idea that religion is a prerequisite for normality, and to some morality itself. From there it leverages the spent cost, be it in time or money tithed to the church or other institution. This second bit I think hits an individualistic society like America harder as we aren't supposed to be checked by anything other than reality. So, if we are played or conned it's our own fault, we "should have been smarter" rather than acknowledging that our emotions are likely what led us to that particular choice.

This last paragraph is a bit tangential, but bear with me it will make sense at the end. For a project for a class, CTVA 100, I compared MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News' websites. At the time only the first two labelled their ads as such. Fox, if I remember correctly, used a rather misleading word, "featured." At that point in my presentation the usual jokes about the intelligence of Fox News viewers were trotted out, and in a rare moment of insight, I pointed out the difference between stupidity and gullibility.
In short, cults and cult like institutions do not prey on the unintelligent, they grow on the backs and labor of the gullible.

by Hirador on Sun Jul 15, 2012 at 07:54:29 PM EST

that are in no way religious, as I mentioned in my post.  I even linked to an extended discussion of the destructiveness of a non-religious cult.

Cults are not about religion. Cults are defined by what they do use certain sets of coercive manipulations to gain power and influence over people, not by what they believe.   Cults are not to be confused with religious sects. Some sects are cults, but not all cults are sects.

While manipulation of humans is nothing new, the advances in the behavioral sciences in the 20th century made the modern cult phenomenon different than anything seen before.

is powerful, and seductive, even in non-cult situations. It is difficult to feel like "an outsider" and point out that the emperor has no clothes. Political campaigns feed on this need for emotional affiliation - it's not for nothing that campaigns are often compared with pro sport.

I would suggest that cults are so sophisticated that even the word gullible isn't appropriate.  While they do con people (that's part of the essence of cults), at the same time avoiding being trapped by them requires that you become extremely cynical towards others (to the point of almost being antisocial), or having some sort of knowledge about their danger up front, or a large measure of luck.  Having a good support system/structure in place is also good protection... and that's also part of the reason why they focus so hard on college campuses, because not all students can develop those structures in a short period of time (some not at all, if their situation makes it difficult to impossible).  Sometimes they do over-do it, for instance with love-bombing, and loose the prospect that they've targeted, but that's less common and falls under the "luck" category.

They know where people are susceptible and how to keep their reality hidden.  They offer the thing that a person has need of, or they offer a false promise of that thing (in my case, a false promise of a real relationship with a young lady and of friendships - to a young college student with no support system built yet).  The dominionists are especially bad because of the "But it's a CHURCH, it can't be that bad!" that is so prevalent in American culture - people tend to ignore their real danger and dismiss it.  I tell people it's best to take the attitude "But for the Grace of God, there go I" with regards to falling victim to a cult.  It's denigrating to call their victims gullible, ignorant, or stupid.  The only word I can think of that might be appropriate is "vulnerable".

I should say that there are a lot more Bible-based cults than the dominionist groups (which comprise roughly 2/3 of the "Christian" groups on my campus).  There are denominations which do not seek to establish theocracy, but their control over their own is absolute.   When I was conned by the Assemblies of God, there was a virtual war going on between them, the Crossroads-affiliated Church of Christ group, and the UPC over potential converts (all used the "beautiful girls and handsome young men" bait-and-switch).  The Southern Baptists also had a strong presence on campus and they were doing their best to convert and control people... I believe that was before the SBC was steeplejacked but I now consider the hard-sell attempts at proselytizing I observed to be suspect.

It has been said that knowledge is power and there are no second thoughts about this fact that it is true. Knowledge and learning can change your whole lifestyle and perspective towards different things. Now the question arises what is ignorance? It has been my experience from a long time according to expert's research and writing about the Religious Right and about many of its other parts, that most of us are resilient to learning much about it. We take hold of slogans as a source of additional knowledge and the tragic part is that we think that it is the actual one and also implementing that information in ways that are creative, diplomatically and in reportorial means are beneficial; or certainly to alter the method we think about the Religious Right and the things we do as a reaction. It is very important to know what we are learning, especially about the sources and then the practical implementation of that information. I want to know about a person who can i pay to do my homework but hope this comment useful for you.

It has been my experience 30 years ago researching and writing about the right and many parts of it, that many of us are very resistant to learning about it. I know that you can read more about Bid4papers here read more about Bid4papers hererelated to education. We take on advertising languages and the perfect name that it calls as a substitute for actual knowledge and saying that understanding is the intellectual, political and journalistic aspects; or indeed to change the way we think about Religious Rights and the things we do.
