Ted Cruz on the New Civil Rights

Tea Party and Religious Right favorite, Houston's Ted Cruz, is riding high as a favored Senator from Texas.  His claim to fame is a filibuster and doing just about anything to oppose the Obama administration.  Ted is a member of Second Baptist Church in the town.  The church is stacked with prominent state GOP party heads and candidates.  Dan Patrick, currently in line to be the next Lieutenant Governor of the state, is in the church house. Ted is a graduate of the church private school and it appears he would like to help fund the school, with federal dollars.
At the Voter Value Summit held in 2013, Ted told the audience that if God is for you who can be against you?  Ted's father sees the providence of God at work in the election of Ted.  A fairly high endorsement for anyone seeking national office.  At the Conference Ted said Obama violates all our Bill of Rights and now military men cannot share their faith.  He also noted the media wants America to continue to slide into an abyss.  He shared his divine approval with the audience comparing them to Queen Esther of the Bible.  Ted then said that Obama is hostile to religious liberty.1   Promoting the idea that the current President is seeking to take away personal rights gets candidates a long line of followers in Texas.
Time Magazine carried an insightful article about the potential Presidential candidate.  "As for policy, Cruz wants to downsize Washington, abolish the IRS and TSA, shutter the Departments of Commerce, Education and Energy and privatize Social Security, which he has called a `Ponzi scheme,' a phrase that helped torpedo Texas Governor Rick Perry's presidential hopes in 2012. He has claimed that liberal financier George Soros was behind an international plot to extend `the tentacles of the United Nations' into American government, abolish private property and eliminate golf courses."2
MSNBC ran a story about the grilling Ted Cruz gave Chuck Hagel when Chuck was nominated for Secretary of Defense.  Hardball's Chris Matthews said the questioning leveled at Hagel from Cruz sounded like Joseph McCarthy.  Hagel, an honored war veteran, was accused of being too cozy with American enemies.  The guilt-by-association tactic used by Cruz reminded many of McCarthy's tactics.  Wayne Slater of the Dallas Morning News told Matthews this tactic of planting a false idea makes him look like McCarthy.  The MSNBC article suggested looking at the video to see more examples of similarities between McCarthy and Cruz.3
Houston Baptist University recently held a forum on Faith and Freedom in the Public Square.  The President of the school, Robert Sloan, was on stage with Cruz and Marvin Olasky.  Olasky is editor of World News, a Religious Right slanted magazine.  Marvin has been associated with Christian Reconstruction and other theocratic concepts.  Sloan is also a member of Ted's church where Ed Young is pastor.  Ed had been listed on the Council on National Policy membership file.  One of his prominent members, who wrote their political activism program, is a noted John Birch Society member.  Their church program got them eventually cross ways with the IRS over political electioneering.
At this forum Ted Cruz said that school choice is the civil rights issue of the 21st Century.   School Choice is a euphuism for using tax money to promote Christian schools.  HBU president Sloan noted that Obamacare is "absolutely unconscionable."4  Thus, seeking government funding for Christian programs is the next march over the bridge at Birmingham.   All Civil Rights advocates should get on board with this concept.  Let Freedom Ring.
A recent article from some of Olasky's friends stated that our government should be funded, according to the Bible, to less than a percent of a percent of the current tax base.5   Cutting over 99% of government spending would appeal to the likes of the tax payers at Second Baptist.  One wonders how big of a slice of that small amount would fall into the coffers of Second Baptist's elite Academy?
Speaking of guilt-by-association, I noted no mention of the facts that both Olasky and Ted Cruz's father were one time Communists.  According to McCarthy's diagnosis Ted and Marvin might be secret Commies themselves.

Had a scary moment when I almost sat next to Ted's father in Austin.

Noted Libertarian author L. Neil Smith does. In fact he seems to buy all the lies and calumny spread about Pres. Obama. It certainly works for Obama that looks liberal next to their slights. Even when Obama is no liberal in reference to his support and enlargements of so many Bush era policies.

I did wonder what would happen if a Machiavelli who was expert in our Constitution would do. I say we know that now.
