Joseph Cella is Back - Taking the Opposite Tack from Pope Francis

Joseph J. Cella has had a change of heart since he joined with those conservative Catholic activists who signed a declaration during the Republican primary season, urging Catholic voters not to nominate Donald Trump.
Recent polls have shown that American Catholics are turning their backs on Donald Trump. But culture war veteran Joseph Cella is now trying to lead the charge in the other direction.

As the current president of Catholic Vote.org Cella has been politically long involved with Domino's Pizza founder Thomas Monaghan in a variety of capacities. (One of these was Fidelis, a Monaghan-funded political organization which, may have engaged in questionable financial activity)  Like former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, Cella fears a U.S. Supreme Court shaped by a Hillary Clinton presidency.  He is concerned for religious freedom (as he defines it) as the be and end-all, and so he is leading the charge for a support group calling itself "Catholics4Trump."  The "About Us" section of its web site is a steaming pot of hyperbole consistent with the bizarre standard of this election season.

This is the most critical presidential election in the history of the United States. Hillary Clinton, a corrupt, radical pro-abortion, anti-Christian career politician threatens to change the face of America forever. If elected, she will name three to four Supreme Court justices, cementing Roe v. Wade into the Constitution and losing the court for generations if not forever. Hillary Clinton opposes home schooling and believes it is the government's right to educate children and not the parents. She will restrict religious speech and persecute Christians who refuse to support her radical social agenda. She will promote illegal immigration and allow millions of unvetted illegal immigrants into our country. The illegal population will vote democrat far into the future so that no conservative can have a viable chance to be elected president. All Catholics have a moral obligation to vote for the only viable alternative to Hillary Clinton in this election: Donald Trump.

Let's consider this statement for a moment.  While there are many distortions in this short space, several things jump out at the reader.

  •        One is the telling use of the word "democrat," using the lowercase "d."  This is either poor writing or (more likely) a deliberate condescending act towards Democrats in general.

  •        Another is the shrill and reckless description of the charge of persecution and casting the lifelong Methodist Clinton as "anti-Christian."  (Unmentioned is that Clinton's running mate US Senator Tim Kaine, is a religious Roman Catholic.)

  •        The attack on undocumented immigrants not only plays to the baser pronouncements of their endorsed candidate, but perhaps more importantly - for an organization that claims a Catholic identity - is clearly out of step with Pope Francis and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

Others in this group make up a Who's Who of the most strident of the Catholic Right.  Among them are: the aforementioned Santorum; anti-choice leader Father Frank Pavone; the neoconservative Hadley Arkes (Santorum's neoconservative mentor and relatively recent convert from Judaism); and Deal Hudson - a man much like Donald Trump has faced allegations of sexual improprieties..

It is worth underscoring that while Pope Francis speaks out for workers who do not receive a living wage, Cella and his cohorts support a man who has declared that wages are too high. And while Francis has spoken out on the danger of Global Warming, Trump is a climate science denier. And while the Pope has also expressed a desire to tone down the divisive rhetoric on biological issues in favor economic and social justice, Cella and Catholics4Trump have taken the opposite tack.

Cella and Trump's other enablers think they can steer Trump in the direction they want. They are seriously wrong if they think Trump is amenable to anyone else's control. I wonder if Cella and the other Catholic cheerleaders for Trump should receive a nomination for this year's Coughie award?

to Doug Coe and The Family. Hillary is unlikely to nominate another RBG to the court. More likely more John Roberts and Elena Kagans. Corporate friendly and fairly moderate. HRC is not all that abortion-friendly, really. She is willing to compromise on choice. As to letting in the illegals... No one has been able to keep them out, and I don't think anyone really wants to. If they want to decrease illegal immigration, they need to crack down on the businesses that employ those people - not the people, who are just doing the best they can to get by. Hillary won't do that. As long as a certain segment of Christians believes that any curtailment of their discrimination against those they don't agree with connotes persecution, then I hope they ARE persecuted.

brought up Hillary's connection with The Family. She has also run on loving war more than Bush, Staunchly supports Israel. Neo-Liberal economics, Neo-Conservative foreign policy. Far from Liberal, she is one War on Women away from being card-carrying Pro-Life.

I tell people I am sick of the Democrat Elites forcing candidates down our throats that people don't and can't trust.  It's happened before, several times.  That's why we have the jackass in the governor's mansion that lives there today.

I've also made people mad when they started spouting nonsense about the primaries and downplaying all of the dishonest and even unlawful effort (successful) to make Hillary the candidate.  Videos, for instance, of the shenanigans in Nevada are available - uncut and unedited (and all of the other shenanigans are documented).  The local Democrats couldn't understand why I don't support Hillary yet have volunteered several times for the campaign.  I tell them I'm not voting for Hillary (no matter what she wants to think), I'm voting AGAINST Trump.  Trump scares the cr*p out of us, we've heard the things he's said and stood for.  At the risk of having Godwin's Law thrown in my face (if the comparison is valid, the law doesn't apply), I think we are looking at another Hitler wannabe.

Funny thing is that I've heard much of the same sort of stuff as spewed by Cella around here... from Bible-believing Christians.  Trying to tell them that it's nonsense and that they're being lied to is an exercise in futility.  They keep hearing it and hearing it and hearing it from the Church-dominated and approved "media" and questioning the lies is almost akin to refusing to 'believe the Bible'.

@Darsan54 I watched JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG last night on Turner Classic Movies, and the noblest of the defendants said: " There was a fever over the land. A fever of disgrace, of indignity, of hunger. We had a democracy, yes, but it was torn by elements within. Above all, there was fear. Fear of today, fear of tomorrow, fear of our neighbors, and fear of ourselves. Only when you understand that - can you understand what Hitler meant to us. Because he said to us: `Lift your heads! Be proud to be German! There are devils among us. Communists, Liberals, Jews, Gypsies! Once these devils will be destroyed, your misery will be destroyed.' It was the old, old story of the sacrificial lamb. What about those of us who knew better? We who knew the words were lies and worse than lies? Why did we sit silent? Why did we take part? Because we loved our country! What difference does it make if a few political extremists lose their rights? What difference does it make if a few racial minorities lose their rights? It is only a passing phase. It is only a stage we are going through."

I had to make a run to the store today.  I noticed a large (even garish) political sign on the way almost as soon as I left: "Christians for Trump!".  That alerted me, and I kept my eyes open.  I noted several signs along the three to four miles to the store.  Those signs REALLY bothered me, because to me they pointed out the total hypocrisy that has been the case for too long.

It reminded me of other signs I'd seen (and even mentioned here) over the years - one of which I later was informed that the church putting them out was also rabidly racist and the sign signaled that the inhabitants were Klan-friendly.  (As a general rule, the same yards that had those other signs have these ones.)

It also reminded me of what I'd learned here.  All of my Christian days, I'd been told that Hitler was a non-Christian, and his glorious Third Reich people were pagans or atheists or something like that (he was even accused of being gay).  Then we learn from one of the researchers that Hitler talked Christian, and his biggest supporters were in the Churches.  I literally thought of that when I saw the sign.

In some way Trump is right.  This country IS a mess, if not a real hellhole in many areas.  People's rights are being tramped (Black Lives Matter did not form in a vacuum and their complaints are valid), and the dominant culture is wanting to dictate even the thoughts and beliefs of people not like them.  But HE is the one promoting fear and encouraging hate.

Since the early days of the United States, people were encouraged to blame the Other, while not seeing the real source of their misery - the rich.  Divide and conquer was the word of the day, and it's the same thing today.  You can see it in the historic treatment of the very poor... it's really not that different (just generally cloaked in pseudo-scientific language today but the same old blame game - based on "your sinfulness is what makes you suffer").

A great many people are miserable - happiness, although usually thought to be fleeting, hasn't been experienced by them in a LONG time.  (I've forgotten what it's like.)  They are (and that includes us) afraid and Trump is playing to those fears - and like his forebears, redirecting their angst and hostility toward the wrong people.  That way they don't see who REALLY has their hands in the people's pockets.  They refuse to see that their gilded hero has a long history of doing the very things that caused their own personal misery, while even blaming the ones he harmed (typical bully and monster behavior).  They refuse to hear that, for instance, those horrible "Libruls" are trying to change things so that those with the wealth pull the weight, rather than those without having to bear all the burden - it seems their brains have been wired with a filter that translates "Make the ones responsible and who have all the resources pay the price!" into "Tax and Spend!".  Their masters have told them we're out to take their hard-earned pittance and give it to someone who sits at home watching TV and making babies, and that enrages them.  Never mind that IT IS A LIE!

Maybe conservatives are stupid after all.  Not ignorant - because the facts can cure that.  Education works as long as those being educated are willing to learn.

The parallels between today in this country, and Germany before Hitler came to power are striking.  In both cases, the innocent were blamed for the crimes of the guilty - and the guilty were rewarded for those crimes.
