Huckabee Calls For Amending US Constitution in Line With "God's Standards"

From one of GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's campaign stops, yesterday, in Michigan (see full story for video) :

"I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution. But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God. And that's what we need to do is amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than trying to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view of how we treat each other and how we treat the family." - Mike Huckabee, January 14, 2008

Mike Huckabee, it is true, has not so far called for the stoning of rebellious children. But in general terms Huckabee's approach is aligned with that of Christian Reconstructionism and, given his ties to Christian reconstructionist leaders and activists it would seem appropriate for reporters to delve more closely into such connections

to come out of Huck's campaign. If Huck gets the nomination, I think I will put my house up for sale. I think I need to find another country to live in, because I'm scared to death he will win. He was not a bad governor, but he'd be a far worse president than even Bush.

If--Gods and Goddesses forbid--Huckabee does get the presidency, that will be the point I start actively planning to leave the country. (Fortunately, I do have friends in Europe I may be able to bail to if necessary.)

I think that statement was so much over the top of what your typical average "Christian accommodater" is willing to swallow that Huckabee has effectively destroyed his campaign with a single paragraph.

Now that I got your attention with that... The Christian Right is not just any sacred cow - it is, in fact, this country's cattle ranch (not the one in Crawford, but the one in Colorado Springs). And Huckabee is just one of its steers. The main bull is James Dobson. Huck, however, DOES have some " 'splainin to do " (as Ricky said to Lucy) about his ten years as a preacher. Those are his "lost" years - none of his sermons are available - to anyone. They have either been shredded or are, like George W.'s records as governor of Texas, permanently sealed. Why? Some people say that Huck had Reconstructionist leanings. The "Constitution" statement is too close to Reconstructionism. Hmmm.
