Huffington Post:  Steve Waldman claims that Obama made a "wise" choice in selecting Rick Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration. Even tho...
In a recent interview with Beliefnet and the Wall Street Journal, Warren equated gay marriage to incest, pedophilia and polygamy and repeated the inaccurate charge that without Prop 8, conservative preachers could be prosecuted for hate crimes. He described "social gospel" Christians of the 20th century as closet Marxists.

Progressive Revival:  Paul Raushenbusch is "sick of Rick."

Tapped: Sarah Posner says that when it comes to his homophobia, Rick Warren doth protest too much.

Human Rights Campaign

Dear President-elect Obama... by inviting Rick Warren to your inauguration, you have tarnished the view that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans have a place at your table.

Rick Warren has not sat on the sidelines in the fight for basic equality and fairness.  In fact, Rev. Warren spoke out vocally in support of Prop 8 in California saying, "there is no need to change the universal, historical definition of marriage to appease 2 percent of our population ... This is not a political issue -- it is a moral issue that God has spoken clearly about."  Furthermore, he continues to misrepresent marriage equality as silencing his religious views. This was a lie during the battle over Proposition 8, and it's a lie today.

Talk to Action:  The Religious Industrial Complex has promoted Rick Warren as a moderate, "new evangelical." That lable has come completely unstuck.  The RIC think tank, Faith in Public Life helped Rick Warren plan his presidential forum last Fall, and had only praise for it, despite among other issues, Warren's having called abortion a Holocaust during and after the event.

Talk to Action:  Bill Berkowitz reports that Rick Warren presented George W. Bush with a "Peace" award.

Glad you called attention to this debacle. The steam has been coming out of my ears. For those who wish to register their opinion of this choice, the address for Obama's "gay outreach" person is: dnoble@barackobama.com

We at http://LiberalsLikeChrist.Org are likewise terribly disappointed in Obama's way of walking all over those who made him what he is today. He claims to be "above ideology", but his ideology is obviously version "O" of Triangulation, i.e. "All I need to worry about are my enemies, as I can take my friends for granted."

Pastor Rick Warren represents a kind of religion that makes liberal preachers like Christ sick, i.e. "imposing heavy burdens on others which they wont lift themselves" ( by denying GLBT's the entitlements they take for granted and telling women to whom they are not even related how many children they are going to carry to term and raise, and when.)

The extremists of the religious right will not be appeased by tokens and will view Obama's reaching out as weakness and a sign of their own importance. It is time to stop validating these extremists and their claim to represent American Christianity. They represent a radical fringe that should be marginalized and ignored. Obama had a chance to empower the mainstream of moderate Christianity and blew it. I am very disappointed.
