[UPDATE:listen to this MP3 from a volunteer investigator who presented testimony, on Marianas forced abortions, religious persecution, amd sex slavery, to GOP Congressman Doolittle - who did nothing. TPM Muckracker has some reasos for Doolittle's inaction ] On August 8, 2006,, Talk To Action author moiv began her story entitled The Religious Right's 800-Pound Abortion Gorilla - On the willingness, by leaders on the Christian and religious right, to look the other way as the GOP raked in profits from the Marianas garment industry - despite a de-facto forced abortion regime imposed on the Chinese women migrant laborers in the Marianas sweatshops, and a seedy sex (and sex slave) trade that thrived alongside the garment industry. Now, several Dem. campaigns have put the gathering scandal to political use.

RAW Story is showcasing a video clip from a debate in which Democratic challenger Retired Lt. Col. Charlie Brown, candidate for California's 4th District, said the following about his GOP opponent: "Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA)  knew of and tolerated forced abortions, sex slavery and sweatshop conditions in the Northern Marianas Islands " ( see here for further coverage of Brown's new TV ads making the "slave slavery / forced abortion $ assertions" )

Here's an introductory excerpt from moiv's extended background into the tawdry and ugly hypocrisy - on the part of the GOP and religious right leadership - in the Marianas scandal:

In his farewell speech, Tom DeLay told the House of Representatives, "We have opposed abortion, cloning and euthanasia, because such procedures fundamentally deny the unique dignity of the human person."

But as a well-compensated favor to one of his "dearest friends," Jack Abramoff, Tom DeLay has actively promoted "such procedures" in the Marianas Islands for years, where thousands of garment workers -- most of them young Chinese women -- labor in indentured servitude, live in labor camps run by members of the Chinese Communist Party, and submit to forced abortions if they become pregnant.

Human rights worker Eric Gregoire told ABC News, "With 11,000 Chinese workers here, I have never seen a Chinese garment factory worker have a baby."

And even though this horrific abuse of human rights is common knowledge, DeLay's supporters on the Religious Right - the same hallelujah chorus promoting the lie that U.S. aid would be used to support China's "one child" policy as they cheer George W. Bush's annual denial of international family planning funds - see nothing, hear nothing, and say nothing.

Brown's campaign is not the only one to have noticed the political significance of the Marianas sex slave / sex trade / forced abortion scandal. Texas congressman Ralph Hall is implicated in the Marianas sex scandal and is being challenged by Democrat Glenn Melancon

Note:

For another underutilized GOP scandal, see John Gorenfeld's coverage of US Utah GOP Senator Orrin Hatch's dalliance with "The Christian cross is satanic/males shoud pinch their genitals with pliers" Unification Church head Sun Myung Moon.

Display:
Bruce, this outstanding piece perfectly illustrates how a Religiously Right controlled GOP is only interested in using faith as a tool for unrestrained self-interest. When it comes down to choosing money or consistency, with these cynical folks, money always wins.
