The religious right is holding a blogger training conference -- in Vegas, baby;  the GOP "Values Voters" presidential primary debate was a bust; but the host committee says that the no-show GOP front runners are scaredy cats; and host committee member Janet Folger predicted that the winner of the official "straw poll" would win the GOP nomination; all this -- and it now seems Newt Gingrich is going to throw his hat in the ring.
Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council and others are sponsoring a big blog training conference in called Godblogcon, at the Las Vegas Convention Center November 7-8th. The keynote speaker is Al Mohler, president of Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary.

GodBlogCon is the only Christian conference in the nation which brings together GodBloggers for the purpose of creating community amidst the GodBloggers and helping GodBloggers, both beginning and advanced, become better contributors in the new media.

The much ballyhooed GOP presidential primary debate at the Values Voters Summit was apparently a bust, notable for low-show rank and file participation  -- and no-show leading candidates. WorldNetDaily reports (hat tip to Tacitus):

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - With "invisible" candidates who failed to show up getting grilled with questions, hundreds of empty seats, not a single mainstream television network on hand, and the name of God invoked countless times, the "unseen world" clearly dominated last night's Republican presidential debate in South Florida.

However, one would never guess that from the press release bravado of the debate sponsors:

The First Ever Values Voter Presidential Debate Straw Poll, held last night at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, declared Governor Mike Huckabee as the pro-family winner.

"While many very good candidates attended the event, Governor Mike Huckabee was the clear winner," said Janet Folger, President of Faith2Action and member of the Values Voter Debate committee. Huckabee received nearly five times the votes of the other candidates.

"The big losers last night were the no-show candidates Fred Thompson who placed at 4 percent, Rudy Giuliani and John McCain who each received 1 percent and Mitt Romney who was the only candidate to receive zero votes at the end of the night.

"How can we expect these no-show candidates to take on Osama Bin Laden and other world leaders when they're afraid to show up and answer questions from Phyllis Schlafly?" asked Rabbi Aryeh Spero of the Jewish Action Alliance, and Values Voter debate panelist. Rick Scarborough, President of Vision America, and Values Voter Debate Committee member added, "If you care about our votes, you need to care about our values enough to show up."

"Unlike other straw polls where candidates have bussed in supporters or paid for their tickets, forty national leaders chose hundreds of delegates who accurately represent America's largest voting block," said Mat Staver, Chairman of Liberty Counsel, and Values Voter Debate committee member. "This is the most important straw poll yet."

Host Committee members include Phyllis Schlafly, Paul Weyrich, Don Wildmon, Mat Staver, Rick Scarborough, and Janet Folger.

"Values Voter Guide DVD's" and video clips of last night's event will be available on the website: www.ValuesVoterDebate.com. While Democrat candidates were invited to a similar forum, all declined.

Writing the day before the event, one of the debate sponsors, Janet Folger declared:

I predict the Values Voter Straw Poll will unify the pro-family movement and determine the nominee.

If Folger is right, former Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas will be the GOP nominee for president in 2008.

Meanwhile, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) who gave a Christian nationalist-themed commencement address at the late Jerry Falwell's Liberty University, this year, seems to be finally ramping-up his presidential campaign.

Display:
Huckabee seems the least pathetic of the Repub candidates. But none of the 'pigmies', as Newt described the current slate, could win the presidency. Newt poisoned the well of American political discourse. If he gets the nomination he'll be crushed at the polls. The only way the Repubs can win this one is to lie, cheat and steal. But then that's what they do.

I was at a hotel once where there was a meeting of the International Association of Minister's Wives and Widows.  And I said to the bartender...something like:  "Wow, I'll bet your business is in the tubes this week, eh?"  And he retorted absolutely not.  They all sneaked around and ended up getting ripped, etc.  Let's hope what happens in Vegas gets spread all over the InterTubes.

That worries me- that they're getting together to support one another.

I stopped attending one blog that I really liked, because of fundamentalist trolls- especially because of one troll that was banned, but found ways to get around the ban (I also ended up lodging a complaint with the police in his state for internet stalking!)

I can just see some of the topics of that conference: Software that allows you to get around being banned; How to trace down people you don't like to harrass them (using different words, of course); How to avoid being arrested for internet stalking- and so on!

The dominionists infiltrate churches to try to force their views on others, they troll websites (for the same reason), they try to force their religion into the schools, and even try to interfere with people's private lives.  Why don't they just mind their own business?
