Witchhunts in Africa and the U.S.A.

Nigerian human rights activist Leo Igwe has recently written at least two blog posts about how some African Pentecostal churches are sending missionaries to Europe and the U.S.A. in an attempt to "re-evangelize the West" -- and reintroducing fears of witchcraft.

Igwe seems unaware that fear of witchcraft, here in the West, isn't being promulgated just by African immigrants but also by plenty of middle-class and well-to-do white people, especially in the Bible Belt, as part of the teachings of various leaders of the "New Apostolic Reformation."

Here are Leo Igwe's recent posts: Four years ago, here on Talk To Action, I documented American connections to African witchhunts here and here, including "spiritual warfare" against "witches" here in the U.S.A. by now-disgraced evangelical leader Ted Haggard.

Ms. Vera, thank you for your post. I live in TN in a very rural, very Bible belt, small town. In 2006, there were several people who found out we were not Baptists or Christians, but are instead Wiccan. They tried to get the town to burn down our house with us in it. Most places would call this murder but they call it doing God's work, burning out the witches. A neighbor saved us only because she didn't want to be implicated in murder. It has always been this way in the South, especially in TN mountain country. It was a horrible feeling and we only have 2 friends left here (both non-Christian). In my 10 yrs here, I've never hurt anyone else or spoke out against Christianity, as I've known some pretty nice Christians throughout my life and refuse to become a bigot. We'll be moving this year, finally, after saving $ for the move. These people will only become more entrenched in their views and willing to die for them, they love being victims and martyrs. When I tried to tell this story to my Wiccan community, most wouldn't believe me. People just want to put their heads in the sand. What is happening in America is scary.

And they were they were not witches. No one accused of witch craft were ever burned here. Rebellious black slaves, however, were burned.

1741 New York city rebellion failed. The fires caused great devastation. The city fathers wanted carnage to pay for it in part. On 6 afternoons and evenings between late May and mid-July 13 African men were burned at the stake. On 6 mornings between March and August, 17 more people of color and 4 whites were hanged. 17 others were exiled.

I took a course on early modern witchcraft persecution in University and found it super interesting. I'll soon be doing more research on witchcraft in Canada. I found some interesting info on Winnipeg, thanks to a friend at https:/www.winnipegtreeservice.com who also studies this top when he's not doing tree care services. He actually got into witchcraft persecution studies because he found a strange carving in an ancient tree that he thinks is almost a thousand years old and connected the symbol of the carving to Indigenous spiritual activity.

I also wanted to mention that my friend from https:/www.winnipegtreeservice.com will has been writing a book on Canadian witchcraft titled "Witches in Canada" so look out for that in upcoming years!
