Faith in Action

This goal of this website is to move from "Talk to Action" in response to the Religious Right.  It might be helpful to note how some people of faith have responded to the threat of Fundamentalists and Dominionists.

A good example from within Southern Baptist circles is my good friend and colleague T Thomas whose ministry combatting malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa is being hightlighted on Ethics Daily today.

T and his wife Kathie served for 18 years as career missionaries with the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.  They were the first missionaries to resign in protest of the changes that fundamentalist, takeover trustees were making at the SBC's mission board.

The first changes that trustees made was to cut ties with international seminaries and schools that were considered "too liberal."  Then they began to change the assignments of all mission board personnel who were involved in education, medical care, and social work to require that they devote all their energies to proclamation and church planting.  Later, they drafted a creed and terminated all the missionaries who balked at signing a creed that made the Bible an idol and required wives to be "graciously submissive" to their husbands.

T and his wife Kathie became one of the first two missionary couples to be supported by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.  CBF is an organization begun by moderate Baptists, like former President Jimmy Carter, who could no longer conscientiously remain in the SBC after the fundamentalist takeover.  The Thomas' first assignment was to minister to the most despised and outcast ethnic group in the world -- the Romany Gypsies.

A couple years ago, T became the Coordinator of the CBF chapter in Oklahoma.  Shortly after his arrival, he organized a non-profit organization called His Nets that distributes insecticide treated mosquito nets in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Recent news stories about a $280.00 wristwatch that detects malaria, about the need for more "bed nets" instead of advisors, and warnings that malarial drugs may be losing their effectiveness -- all this recent news can be used to demonstrate the importance and cost effectiveness of this ministry.

A $6 donation to His Nets -- an amount well within the fund raising abilities of almost any American child -- enables this organization to distribute an insecticide treated mosquito net.  These nets can protect an entire family for up to three years during the hours that they are most vulnerable to contracting malaria.  Malaria is transmited by mosquito bites.

Display:
That is one of the things I look for when I examine the various religious organizations- what their mission statement reads. Some are reflections of the Nicene or Apostolic Creed, starting with the belief in the Father Almighty. Others start off stating that they believe the Bible to be the absolute true, infallible instrument of God's word.

"Demoting Jesus" is exactly what these people do. The deletion of the two words in the SBC Articles has elevated the Bible above Christ, and even above God. Christ comes in 'third' in order of importance.

Scary stuff.

by Lorie Johnson on Wed Jan 25, 2006 at 11:38:36 AM EST

If you are interested in looking at additional evidence about bibliolatry in the SBC, here's a link to some correspondence I had with Paige Patterson, one of the architects of the fundamentalist takeover, before the SBC revised its confession of faith.

I found an interesting Wikipedia article about "Sola Scriptura" after I posted about the differences in belief statements in my LJ community.

Some churches call this belief in 'Bible only' a heresy. Contrast it with "Prima Scriptura" which states that the Bible is the first, but not only, resource of the faithful.

Interesting.

The Wikipedia article referenced doesn't really address the fundamentalist position on biblical inerrancy. 'Sola scriptura' and biblical inerrancy are different, but related, concepts.

Much of protestantism adheres to some extent to 'sola scriptura' (depending on how that is understood).  Bibilical inerrancy, on the other hand, is a recent innovation of the fundamentalists that finds no serious support in either scripture or tradition. It assumes the truth of 'sola scriptura' but goes way beyond it in elevating the Christian bible to a position of absolute authority. In fact, by asserting scripture to be 'inerrant', it not only raises the words themselves to divine status but also ascribes infallibility to a particular semi-literalist reading and circular exegesis of the text.

In practice, those who preach biblical inerrancy are generally of the secondary view that there can only be one inerrant interpretation of scripture (their own). What is the point, after all, of an inerrant text that is open to multiple interpretations? So they substitute the authority of the church, or tradition, or the guidance of the Holy Spirit, with a detailed statement of faith, to which all all adherents must subscribe without question. The reading of scripture ends up being subordinated to these creedal positions, which are of course formulated, modified or extended by the powers that be within the church. Two great examples of this 'reading' are the use of creationism and dispensationalism as overarching frames of reference for interpreting Genesis and Revelation (and a lot in between).

Worse, belief in inerrancy stops people from seeing the great epic sweep of scripture in all its many layers and textures. It stops people from asking questions or from reading scripture with an open mind to all the possibilities of meaning that can be derived from it. It stops all critical discussion dead in its tracks, because the inerrancy party believes that all important questions have already and absolutely been answered.

But the chief danger with the inerrancy doctrine is that it provides a cover for all manner of authoritarian and theocratic impulses, from the family and local church level through to the national and international spheres. 'Sola scriptura' brought a new understanding of scripture that allowed people to break free from the suffocating clutches of religious tradition and conformity and find new truths (or rediscover old ones) in the Bible. Bibilical inerrancy serves the opposite agenda by once again forcing adherence to dogma and ecclesiastical rigidity.

Prodigal has given an insightful and astute analysis of inerrancy.

Could you make a list of the "all important questions"?

>>Could you make a list of the "all important questions"? <<

These would be the the required items of belief you find in their statements of faith. It most cases you must believe all of them unquestioningly or be considered not a true Christian, or worse yet, not 'saved.' Of course the list of settled questions grows longer as more and more groups add statements about 'traditional marriage' and abortion and other contentious social issues to the list of things one must believe if one 'accepts the literal truth of scripture'.

Creedal statements are used by the religious right to separate the 'sheep' from the 'goats', as a sort of litmus test of who is inside or outside the faith. While most will claim that faith alone is the only prerequisite for salvation, the implication is never far from the surface that doctrinal nonconformity is evidence of an unregenerate soul. They are also used to enforce conformity within their membership and to keep the character of permitted discourse pure from contamination.

...is that it even stifles the possibility of a better interpretation of the Bible.  (Seriously.)

Interestingly, one of the best examples of this is the entire book of Revelation itself; premillenial dispensationalists in particular see this as a description of the End Days, which is actually a very recent innovation.

Most Biblical scholars who have done research on the historical background in which the book of Revelation was written, however, now are generally of the agreement that Revelation is a heavily coded message to the early church during a time of severe Roman repression towards the end of the Roman Empire's pagan era and in fact the "666" (thought now to be "616" based on new research of the Oxyrhynchus, the oldest known compiled New Testament) has been positively identified with Nero (either the Roman emperor Nero who was infamously (and falsely) known for fiddling whilst Rome burnt, or (more likely) Domitian  (who was often known as a "Second Nero").  The entire book is, in essence, a massive political cartoon and scathing condemnation of politics of the Roman empire of the time--with the strong message of "This too shall pass".

Merely interpreting it as a documentation of the events of the end of the world actually robs the book of much of its richness, methinks.

Some of the other examples where a literalist reading (enforced by a statement of faith) robs people of the full meaning and richness of the Bible:

a) The book of Job.  (Often interpreted as a "bet" between God and the Devil, in the original Jewish context it's actually much more like a trial against humanity with Job and his various trials being "exhibit A", "exhibit B", etc.  Most Christian readings of this, especially fundamentalist readings, miss this entirely because they are unaware that the "satan" mentioned is not the Christian devil but rather the "Adversary".  (Yes, there's an important distinction here!))

(Among other things, the term normally translated as Satan (singular) is actually an adjective (yes, "Satan" is actually an adjective), and is a term used in the old Hebrew legal system equivalent to our prosecuting attorney; in fact, the term is STILL used in Israeli courts to this day in this context!  Basically, Job was "Law and Order: Humanity's Worth!"  Rabbi Shmuel Golding does an excellent essay here in regards to "Satan" in Judaism compared to Christianity, and makes very specific mention of the book of Job and how much is lost in especially fundamentalist Christian interpretations of it.)

b) Huge sections of the words of Jesus himself, including one of the most famous of Jesus' own parables--the tale of the Good Samaritan.  (Literalist readings of the Bible and fundamentalist approaches--which strongly frown on taking into account historical context--miss so much of the tale of the Good Samaritan that it's not funny.  This is possibly not coincidential, as I'll get into.

(The groups mentioned in the story as passing the man who was robbed and beaten--a priest and a Levite--were the two main priestly groups in Israel at the time.  Israel (as the Roman province of Palestine) was actually given a surprising amount of latitude, essentially being an autonomous area which was still in many areas under Judaic religious law in civil matters; the Pharisees (particularly legalistic lawyers) and Saducees (an aristocratic group of the priesthood) actually fought quite a bit over interpretation of the Law.

(Levites in particular were seen as a holy caste; per Biblical injunction they were the only ones allowed to touch the Ark of the Covenant (supposedly without being struck dead), and are explicitly tied in with the priesthood.  This is important to remember in regards to what I'm about to note.

(The Samaritans were--and still are--a very early split from Judaism resulting from the main body of Judaism in Israel having rejected the Samaritans due to the large number of "converts" (much of Samaria's population was replaced in an early Assyrian invasion, and that population later converted to early Judaism); there are also indications of a possible split in regards to rebuilding of the Temple.  Samaritans use the Torah only (the rest of the Old Testament besides the Pentateuch they regard as invalid), are to this day still subject to religious persecution, and are (ironically) now probably the only Judaic group existing to follow the full letter of Levitican law (including animal sacrifice as atonement and up to and including "menstruation shacks" for women).  Of note, the legalistic systems that had evolved by the time of Jesus' birth (much less rabbinic authority) were not and are not recognised as legitimate by Samaritans.)

(Needless to say, Samaritans and the general Jewish population consider each other quite heretical, on a level (in Biblical times) as deeply as, say, Mormons and Protestants held each other in deep distrust in the 1800s (which is to say that this led to occasional things like lynchings on both sides) or how deeply certain Kurdish sects and mainstream Islam hold each other in contempt in Iraq now (this is starting to be a major problem, as these sects are starting to be condemned as "Satanists").  It was extremely radical for Jesus to promote them--it'd literally have been equivalent to (in modern context) a Catholic priest and the head of Focus on the Family passing up a guy who was mugged on the street and a gay Unitarian Universalist helping him out, and this being presented at a speech to the Young Republican's Convention at that! (Jesus' original statement was to a lawyer, remember!))

(Bibletexts.com has an excellent discussion on just WHY the parable of the Good Samaritan was so earth-shattering in context.)

I won't even mention cases where more accurate translation of the Bible has been dispensed with to keep with an agenda (which  I've touched on here in this commentary--certain translations popular in dominionist circles that aren't "King James Only" have actually been explicitly translated towards a dominionist viewpoint, notably the New International Version.)

This post is a great example of BOTH of the things that I think front page posts need to try to always accomplish (though I fall short here myself) --

  1. provide examples of "how to"--i.e., how to TAKE ACTION relative to preserving and strengthening civil and human rights against Religious Right excesses, and

  2. provide resources--be it an elected official's office phone number, a list of relevant links, a link to a PDF of a manual or report or study, a webpage for donations, etc.--that inform and empower readers relative to preserving and strengthening civil and human rights against Religious Right excesses.

Regarding #2: I think Talk 2 Action should do a bit more of this in a thoughtful and strategic way, perhaps eventually with e-alerts/Calls to Action e-mailed out to registered users. Or not. It's something to think about though.

Anyway, thank you for this great example of people turning talk to action. By telling us about it, you are turning talk to action yourself, and even more so by also providing a link to a donations webpage.

I know your expertise on this. I must say we should have an online discussion on this. Writing only comments will close the discussion straight away! And will restrict the benefits from this information. Agen Poker Indonesia
